Ph.D. Innovation Program Requirements
Innovation Program students fulfill all requirements listed for first-year Ph.D. students and Ph.D. candidates. Requirements include:
- Technical proficiency
- Technical breadth
- Specialization
- Professional competence
- Original research
- Dissertation archiving
Admitted students also work with a special advisory committee to see that all Innovation Program requirements are met. These include:
Skills Development
- ENGG 195: Seminar on Science, Technology, and Society (1 term)
- ENGG 196: Seminar on Applied Science and Technology (5 terms)
- ENGG 197: Ph.D. Professional Workshops (recommended but not required; can be used to write a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) proposal)
- ENGG 198: Research-in-Progress Workshop (annual participation)
Applied Mathematics (choose 2 courses)
- ENGS 91: Numerical Methods in Computation
- ENGS 92: Fourier Transforms and Complex Variables
- ENGS 93: Statistical Methods in Engineering
- ENGS 100: Methods in Applied Mathematics I
- ENGS 104: Optimization Methods for Engineering Applications
- ENGS 105: Computational Methods for Partial Differential Equations I
- ENGS 106: Numerical Linear Algebra
Engineering Depth (4 courses)
- Courses in the student's area of research, chosen to increase depth of knowledge and expertise. These courses should be selected in concert with the thesis advisor.
Innovation Coursework (3 courses)
- ENGG 321: Introduction to Innovation
- ENGM 180: Corporate Finance
- ENGM 188: Law, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (or equivalent course)
Innovation Elective (choose 1 course)
- ENGM 179: Financial and Managerial Accounting
- Any graduate-level technical course in an area outside the student's area of core expertise
Internship
- Students will work in a start-up company — possibly their own — or an R&D department in their general fields(s) of interest for up to six months. Prior to starting the internship, students must see Lori Jackson (Cummings Room 111) to discuss financial/insurance status of the internship period.
